Sheep Quality Assurance Training

The Baltimore County Sheep and Wool Producers group will be offering the ASI Sheep Safety and Quality Assurance (SSQA) Training Program at their regularly scheduled monthly meeting December 6, 2010 at the new Baltimore County Extension Office.

The program will start at 7 p.m. and will cover the Level One Training of the SSQA program.  All participants completing this program will be certified by the American Sheep Industry Association and will receive a certificate.

The training emphasizes industry accepted "Good Management Practices" for 10 safety and 6 quality criteria for production of meat, milk and wool. There are many reasons for producers to strive to supply safe, high quality products.

Producers have a responsibility to provide food that is safe for consumption. Addressing the objectives in this training  will help ensure the well-being of sheep and alleviate consumer concerns about animal welfare. A reputation for high quality products will result in more marketing opportunities for producers.

The training will be conducted by David Greene, University of Maryland Carroll County Extension Agent (retired). To register (no cost), contact the Baltimore County Extension Office at (410) 771-1761 or dmarti@umd.edu.
