Landmark agreement reached in Ohio

Ohio agricultural leaders and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) recently reached an agreement.  As a result, the Humane Society has agreed to drop its ballot initiative for 2010.

There are 10 points in the landmark agreement, including no new permits for egg facilities which use battery cages, a transition to group housing for veal calves (by 2017), and a phase-out of sow gestation stalls/crates (by 2025), as well as a moratorium on any new gestation stalls (after 2010).

The Humane Society has agreed to jointly fund independent research projects and studies to identify best management practices and work for the highest farm animal care and welfare standards.

The Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board has agreed to take action on downer cattle and euthanasia of farm animals.  In November 2009, Ohio voters approved the creation of the board.
