One hundred and forty (140) Maryland 4-Hers competed in the State 4-H Livestock Skillathon. The Skillathon was hosted by the Maryland Cattlemen's Association and held at their recent annual convention in Hagerstown.
Wool judging was part of the skillathon. Seniors judged a class of commercial fleeces, while intermediates and juniors evaluated samples of wool and answered questions.
The 2009 Sheep & Wool Skillathon will be held Sunday, May 3 at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival. Youth between the ages of 8 and 18 are eligible to compete as individuals and members of a team from the same club, FFA chapter, or county. Contact Susan Schoenian at (301) 432-2767 x343 or sschoen@umd.edu for more information and to pre-register.
There is a renewed interest in wool thanks to skillathons and stockman's contests.
