The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) commissioned a study to determine the economic impact of the United States Sheep Industry.
According to the study, prepared by Juniper Economic Consulting, Inc., of Byers, Colorado, the U.S. sheep industry generates $3.2 billion of economic activity at the farm gate and $4.5 billion at the wholesale and retail level.
The study recognized the ethnic market as a "significant and growing component of the sheep industry." It valued the ethnic market at $72 million in 2007, based on an estimate that 1,075,165 sheep and lambs sold to the ethnic market in 2007.
